Tastes Like Green
Somewhere at the end of a rainbow,
Leprechauns dance around their pot of gold.
They dress in green and wave their shamrocks.
I’d be happy too, with all that gold!
I have a green milkshake that tastes like dirt.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I was thinking about all of the “Hallmark Holidays” we have today. Fake holidays created by ad agencies so they can sell us (and our kids) garbage. Candy hearts that taste like chalk. Eggs that are barely chocolate. Pumpkin flavored lattes. Disgusting green milkshakes.
Don’t fall for it. A handmade card or note is priceless. A $6 card from the gift store doesn’t say much, regardless of the words printed inside.
We’re going to have lots of flavors here at Frogburps. We’d be silly not to write some holiday themed stories. But they won’t be tossed off just to make a buck, and we hope they won’t leave a bad taste in your mouth.
I had a lot of fun illustrating this, not at least because you might see a leprechaun in our next book. This was a perfect opportunity to explore how he could look. It took a bunch of sketches to reach one I like, but I think I might stick with the one on top of the pot for the book. We’ll see.
I’m a big milkshake lover, but a green one that tastes like dirt doesn’t sound too appealing. I like mine to be pure vanilla. Only thing to top it on a hot summer day is mocha frappuccino. That’s a drink that would make a leprechaun give up a whole pot of gold, I’m sure. And now I really want one. Even if it’s still winter. Ah – the joy of illustrating and writing. All the things you can make up in your head, and then crave afterwards.
